In response to numerous complaints from parents, and undoubtedly related to the $30 million lawsuit filed against Myspace last month, the social networking giant has taken new steps towards protecting its youngest members.
As the Dateline special "To Catch a Predator" made public to the world, cyber hot-spots like Myspace, Xanga, and Facebook attract kids who use the site to express themselves, talk to their friends, or make new ones. Unfortunately, those same social networking sites have become an online predator's dream come true. With millions of kids logging on every day, those who are naive, overconfident, or vulnerable make easy prey for those who manipulate and abuse children.
Did you know:
Parents have filed over $30 million in lawsuits against Myspace?
|
But will Myspace's security promotions work?
Sadly, not much, though this would be the case for any social networking site that seeks to protect its users.
The main issue at hand in establishing
online safety for kids is that of age verification, or in this case, the lack thereof. Sure, adults can no longer communicate with young teens on Myspace unless they already have the child's email address or full name, but what's to keep an online predator from establishing himself online under a false age?
For that matter, what's to keep the young teens from lying about their ages too?
Parents, that's what.
Myspace security officials have often made the point that online safety begins in the home, and it's the parent's responsibility to make sure that their child is using the Internet as safely as possible.
At Awareness Tech we agree wholeheartedly, but we also know that parents can't always be there to look over their child's shoulder. This is why we created WebWatcher, to promote online safety even when parents aren't in the home.
WebWatcher combines all of the most effective
parental control software, including website blocking, website recording, email recording, chat recording, and more. It's easy to install, easy to use, and best of all, can be accessed from any location. In other words, with WebWatcher parents can check-in on their child's Internet use from work.
As of yet, there's still nothing parents can do about online predators hiding out in social networking sites. But, with WebWatcher they can do everything possible to keep their kids safe on their end.
