While most of the media has focused on social networking sites and the dangers of the Internet for children, a new online phenomenon is also drawing attention. College students, who also frequent those same social networking sites, are falling prey to cyber stalkers.
Incoming college students are heavy users of sites like myspace and facebook because they allow these kids to keep in touch with old friends, or meet new ones. As a result, personal information is regularly published in their profiles. This could include names, sororities or fraternities, addresses, and more. With all of this personal information available to the world, it comes as no surprise that some students are discovering the dangers of the Internet the hard way.
Did you know:
Several college women have been harassed by having their faces superimposed over sexually explicit photos?

In Colorado, the cyber stalker problem has taken a personal turn. Several college aged women have been targeted by an individual who has superimposed photos of their faces over sexually explicit photos. Those photos were then sent to them and their families as a means of harassment.
The photos of the women's faces were cut and pasted from social networking sites frequented by each young woman.
And it's frustrating to pursue a
cyber stalker, since the Internet provides interaction
and a kind of anonymity that makes prosecution difficult. Usually the victim will know their stalker, but with so many people posting their personal information online, that trend is changing.
One thing is still the same, however. It's not unusual for any stalker to progress to violence, and cyber stalkers are no exception.
Many people just don't know how to stop a stalker. Whether it's via computer or offline, the police should be called right away and a report filed. If it's an online attack, one thing that can be useful is
keystroke monitoring software. Keystroke monitoring software records all of the data that passes through your computer, making it easier to present the police with evidence.
With concrete proof in hand, the police can then work with online security experts to put your cyber stalker behind bars.
